Poll: Which novel would you like to see ported the most? (142)

1 Name: Anonymous : 2009-05-16 19:27 ID:A6K85QyF [Del]

I'm just curios,
so let me know which novel would you like to see ported the most.

My choice is "Phantom of Inferno", because I haven't played it yet and the DVD port must have been an awful mess.

Other than that: ITT propose a novel for me to port :)

(And no, phantom is out...)

I second Wanko to Kurasou

I second Kana Imouto.

Since Clannad and Kanon are being ported, why not port Air and Tomoyo After?

97 Name: Boinciel : 2009-10-12 07:53 ID:SPjf+Yau [Del]

Air and Tomoyo After's translations aren't finished yet!
Well, technically neither are Clannad and Kanon's, but Clannad's is mostly-done and Kanon's will probably be done before the port ever is.

Actually, Kanon's translation has been done for a few months now.

Why isn't it on the list with the other novels?

I said it`s translation. The VNDS port is still far from finished.

How about Demonbane?

It's by the same people who made Phantom and Saya no Uta. (I would say please somewhere but I'm not sure where to insert it into the post, so just assume that politeness is intended)

102 Name: Anonymous : 2009-10-22 11:41 ID:rXCUIURH [Del]

I think Demonbane's fan-translation was halted when the collaboration between JAST USA and Nitroplus was announced. They even hired some guys from the fantranslation scene, supposedly. So chances of a complete english translation appearing prior to the official commercial English JAST release are more than slim (i.e. there is none).

Even after the JAST release I doubt someone would start/continue a fantranslation or hack the JAST one. And there haven't been any ports of commercial English releases to VNDS so far either. When one guy here suggested Kana Imouto he got shouted down for it due to the game still being sold in the US or something.

103 Name: Rai : 2009-10-27 12:07 ID:sK/qcZ1W [Del]

Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni (Kai and Rei included of course), since the first four are being "officially" released sometime the end of this month.
Ah, as mentioned in previous posts, a translation of the Higurashi DS games would be fine too.

how about school days or Wanko to Kurasou

wanted somehow...

I do believe there's a Wanko to Kurasou thread here somewhere but I can't say anything as to progress on it. i just recall seeing it is all. ;p
There is: http://www.digital-haze.net/ch/vnds/kareha.pl/1237086512/l50

That one. . .
Is a dropped project . . .
I think. . .
Because it has no news nor updates over 2 month. . . .

I'm so excited. .
But now totaly disapointed by it. . . .

I would like to play something from G-collections on vnds, like Snow sakura or The Sagara Family, i would port it myself but i dont know how to convert .ISF files to .txt.

108 Name: Anonymous : 2009-12-10 14:25 ID:VngLWfcA [Del]

Yay for more G-collection titles for DS!

109 Name: Anonymous : 2009-12-12 17:09 ID:3scSt8le [Del]

>>107
Well, personally I'd vote for Sagara Family, since I haven't played that one yet. But I I failed on the first attempt to extract the script.

As for Snow Sakura (btw one of the eroges that everybody should have played: http://zepy.momotato.com/2009/09/01/eroge-that-everybody-should-have-played/ ):

Download and install crass (http://galcrass.blog124.fc2.com/ )
Unzip the archive, in my example to F:\crass\
Open a command line window and navigate to the new crass directory.

Run the command: crage.exe -d "D:\Program Files\G-Collections\Snow Sakura" -o F:\crass\snowsakura
Be careful to replace the first path with your Snow Sakura installation directory and the second path with your crass folder\snowsakura, this is where the resources will be extracted to.

The script files can be found in the IFS folder, open them with Notepad++.

All characters are spaced multiple times. I'd recommend using Notepad++ and do a Regular expression replace. Search for: "([^])[]" and replace it with "\1" (ingore the double quotes when copypasting).

Thank you very much, if i can obtain the scrips i am going to port Snow Sakura, but i am a begginer so i think porting it will take a long time.

Probably a nigh impossibility, but I'd love to see Katawa-Shoujo get ported.

Katawa Shoujo

115 Name: Anonymous : 2010-08-11 23:32 ID:8eFi2sK1 [Del]

Personally, I'd like to see Ever17 somehow ported.

116 Name: Hogan : 2010-08-13 23:22 ID:KRrgJsnt [Del]

Katawa Shoujo DS was recently re-floated on the ks forums, but they weren't using vnds.

Also the devs shot it down, which is kinda odd, and makes me want to look at that game again (wasn't in a ren'py?).

ever17 was at one point being done, but Im fairly certain its been dropped nowadays.

117 Name: CXBlackCatXD : 2010-08-14 01:09 ID:5uKsXscd [Del]

Actually...funnily enough I found something that could unpack the resource files for Renpy (those data.rpa files) and I currently have the files used for Katawa Shoujo...but no way to get the script in an understandable language.

>>117
Forgot to mention it, but its not like I'm planning on doing anything close to porting KS...That just happened to be the only Renpy game that I could on test at the time (goes to show that KS is a lot better than the other renpy games xD?).

Would anybody be interested in Sharin no Kuni?

I do, I've just read Sharin no Kuni's synopsis and it looks very interesting ! :D

me.
Please do it. I beg you.

Yeah, AnimeED extract all the resources pretty easily (was using it when attempting to translate ever17 psp), but again no luck on scripts.
and Sharin looks interesting, if not a bit generic.

Gonna see about that ren'py script extractions, as there's a few small games that are mildly interesting. Maybe find one as good as TBEE haha

Crap, maybe I shouldn't have said anything. Now everyone expects me to actually do it XD

126 Name: Roganis : 2010-08-24 14:19 ID:Ekh1FLUK [Del]

Too late, now you have to do it :D

127 Name: CXBlackCatXD : 2010-08-24 14:57 ID:5uKsXscd [Del]

That is why you should just place this stuff on the IRC, though I guess it just isn't as great now that there is school bursting into our great ways of wasting time.

If you feel like doing it, then feel free to do it xD. If you need help, I'm always happy to help (even if it takes some obscure or lame method to do so).

128 Name: Hogan : 2010-08-25 23:46 ID:oJICUtbe [Del]

hm, out of curiosity, anyone heard of a script to extract text from ren'py '.rpyc' files?

I think they're "encoded" just using a form of zlib, so if no-one has anything I might see what I can do...

129 Name: CXBlackCatXD : 2010-08-26 01:00 ID:5uKsXscd [Del]

I'm the only one that actually spent time looking for such a thing, but never found anything. Renpy's source code is available (I think) so you could just look at that (me being the illiterate fool in coding, I felt little use even attempting to look).

130 Name: Hogan : 2010-08-26 03:10 ID:oJICUtbe [Del]

haha, I've been looking around as well, but no luck.
Been looking at the source code over the last week (that how I worked out it was using zlib), so maybe I can work something out. No promises, as I'll be learning python on the fly ^^

but with further vn sugestions, katawa shoujo ^_^

If you check out the wiki, it should have the links...dunno if they are all working or not though :/...

I think the devs of Katawa Shoujo gave a big no on porting it to DS.

Since some other idiot bumped this thread, I'll take this opportunity to point out that you are wrong.

KS is a legitimate, legal project. The developers and authors retain all the rights to their work, and the terms of their licences and agreements must be upheld. KS can sue you for uploading their VN somewhere they don't like in exactly the same way that any commercial entity can.

Just because something is free doesn't mean it is in the public domain.

137 Name: CXBlackCatXD : 2011-09-11 21:18 ID:zSMxm4lS [Del]

>>136
cough cough
You know, practically half of the ported stuff are legitimate legal projects and they ALL can still sue us as well...the community IS pretty much based on piracy. It's great to get clarification that KS can sue us just like every other company, though telling it to people who seem to give low priority to moral code, the only reason why it doesn't happen is because the community is also a bunch of lazy arses.

Who's "us"?

VNDS is a program that interprets scripted data and outputs it in a fashion similar to a visual novel. If I wanted I could just as easily write my own VN for it, as port something. VNDS in and of itself is no more "illegal" than a flashcart is.

As for the actual ports of existing VNs, there's a lot of things to take into account. People throw around questions of legality on the internet seldom with actual information to back it up. For one, most of these companies just don't care. If Type Moon had a problem with their titles being translated by Mirror Moon, they would have said something about it. Take Tsukihime for example. It's what what...over a decade old, now? It's pretty doubtful the company is losing money over something like a VNDS port. Ryukishi07 himself wrote a letter of thanks to the group that was fan translating Higurashi before an official US company picked it up, because he was touched that people cared about his work so much to make it available in other parts of the world. Ports of newer games such as Cross Channel, Ever17, Kirakira, etc require you to patch the PC version with a converter, so you still have to own the original game to make use of the VNDS port. It's assumed you bought the game in question, but it's not the porter's fault if you obtained it by illegal means. "Encouraging" and actually committing a given act are very different concepts in the legal field, the former being nearly impossible to clearly define.

VNDS ports aren't released in Japanese. The companies producing visual novels for the most part (with some exceptions) don't attempt to have them translated into other languages, nor do they attempt to obtain copyright in other contries. Meaning that their products were never intended for any market outside of Japan. VNDS ports aren't intended for audiences inside Japan. No money that the company ever intended to make is being lost.

The same line of reasoning applies to anime and manga in general. If you go by the reasoning that modifying an existing visual novel by porting it to another platform is copyright infringement, then all fansubbed anime, and all scantilated manga, is also in violation of copyright. All of it. Yet, few companies in Japan are running around trying to put a stop to it. Why? Because it's free advertising in foreign markets. It's a different situation when a title is licensed in another country, but the vast majority of titles never "officially" leave Japan. An anime is created that the company behind it does not intend to license abroad. Fansubbers get hold of it. You watch it. You love it. You buy artbooks. You buy wallscrolls. You buy figurines. You buy keychains. A company that never intended to sell to you in the first place is now making money off of you.

The Pirate Bay continues to exist after repeated threats from companies all around the world to "cease and desist". Yet nothing happens. Because the works in question are not copyright protected in the country in which the Pirate Bay originates.

In theory, copyright is about "intellectual property". In practice, it's about money. From that standpoint, the VNDS project is a small fry that no big companies could care less about, any more than they would really come after you if you copied a VHS tape.

New topic please :)
