Picking this one up as well. It should be a lot easier than Kanon. The thing I'm worried about most with this one is screen effects. It's going to require some testing but I think I might release a full episode 1 for people to test after I get up to a certain point. Let's say the first twilight since that should be enough to test a bit of the commands. Otherwise it'd take a while for me to release something major since I'm a pretty slow reader.
This small demo is the opening of episode 1 and goes up until where the OP movie plays. I am not affiliated with Witch Hunt in any way but I will deal with misc errors like typos if people report them here. I know the script is littered with them so you'll not only be helping out the DS port by reporting errors but also the PC translation.

I seem to have run into a problem. From my testing it appears to be the middle sprite causing the problem. Switching the order the sprites are displayed fixes it also. Instead of left, center, right; center, left, right works. Also removing the middle sprite fixes it but removing the right sprite does not. Here's the code for that section but nothing seems wrong with it from what I can tell.

As I said in the first post, I am a slow reader but would upload Episode 1 after I reached the first twilight. I've finally reached that point and it seems to be playing well.
Some things to look out for:
Graphic effects where they shouldn't be (rain mostly)
Abnormally long delay timers
Off center character sprites
Broken images (if you constantly get a Guru Meditation error in a single spot, broken images could be causing it as I found out)
Any crashes
Optional:
Grammar, spelling, or other missing characters.
What has not been tested:
Anything not long after the morning of the first twilight
Tea Party
Secret
Some major revisions were made before the first twilight so those could use rechecking
Sound effects are kinda weird right now as VNDS does not support playing multiple sounds at once. Sometimes the rain sound effect will get knocked out of the buffer by a knock sound effect or something similar. I could probably implement something for this some other time but it's not at the top of my list.
Umineko has some really long lines which go over the 500 character limit if you don't follow the same clicking points as the PC version, so sometimes you have to click in weird places. Report any weirdness that might've resulted from this but I don't consider this a bug as it plays like the PC version.

I plan to require Episode 1 for future episode releases to cut down on space. These downloads will give you all resources except BGMs required for Episode 2 and above. Future downloads should in the 50mb area.

That's a pity, from what I remember a lot of work was done on it, and the translation of the 4th episode was recently completed, as well as translation fixes to the 1st one.

well it'd be easier if it was possible to use colored text. right now it only has white for past text and blue for curently displayed text, so no specific red text or blue text lines are possible.

Are the different text colours necesary? Infact even if it is, why not add e.g "(Blue)" in text in front of a line supposed to be dictated in blue? Any attempts to convert Umineko during the mp3 conversion are met with errors and the program freezes. This was done on a fresh Episode 4 copy with the Witch Hunt patch just added. Repeated 3 times and several others have had the same problems.

As far as I know, there can only be one VNDS directory at a time, so that switching between them would at least require changing the folder names each time. Also I'm not sure if just linking the novel directories works out. Surely you know a method to avoid having to duplicate each novel into the second VNDS directory, since that would "hurt" for sure, in terms of megabyte.

Hey...It's gonna be a long post XD I had converted english patched umineko ep4...The converter progam run just fine and finished convertion...It generated 3 diffrent folders - "umineko" (29kb), _generated(289mb) and _orginal(4gb @__@)...well since umineko folder was kind of empty and _orginal was too big for my sd card to handle I uploaded _generated flie (The only diffrence between this and umineko folder was that there wasn't a save folder and there where actualy graphic and sound files in folders). VNDS detected the novel and the main menu with the choises of the episodes worked just fine but when I chose any episode I got a bug report "Unable to open script file: script/umil-opning.1.scr" I looked into the scrpit folder and there are only two files there - folder "special" and "main" file...
well...how should it look like? Did I do something wrong? Anyone?
About that previous post...I run convertion again but this time I have read the Script Convert report...it appears that program has trobbule conveting script...can comeone upload a good script folder if it isn't a problem? ;]

This tells me two things:
Your Umineko install seems to be broken/modified/unreadable in some way. Doing a clean install should fix the problem.
I reinstalled and now I'm getting a new error, which i will include in this post. What directory do i set the converter to find the game, in the actual folder, or the patch folder. Any help will be appreciated.

Clean the _generated folder before converting.
When the _generated folder is recreated by the converter it should contain these text files:
_generated/namemapping-background.txt ~149KB
_generated/namemapping-foreground.txt ~197KB
_generated/namemapping-sound.txt ~8.56KB
I don't know if that will do any good, seeing as how whenever the conversion fails, i whipe the folder of its contents before attempting again :S. but I'll try again.
And before deleting it, I just noticed that there is only one text file, and that is "namemapping.txt but I'm guessing 1.0.5 does the conversion differently or something? Guess I'll find out.

If it creates a _generated/namemapping.txt file you're using the wrong version.
If it creates nothing the program must have already printed an error earlier.
When I used the 1.0.5 converter, it created the three files you spoke of, so now I know that I'm using the correct converter. However, the file sizes aren't the same you listed, I don't know if that means anything or not. All three files are 4KB, so I'm assuming something is missing in them or something. But the files are indeed here, any other idea for what the problem may be?:(

I'm about ready to give up, I did another fresh reinstall from my disk, same error appears, I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I guess all I can really do is wait and hope someone posts a pre-converted batch of ep1-4, since nothing I've done seemed to fix the problem. If anyone would be kind enough to do that it would be greatly appreciated ._.

Hi guys i have a little problem (how surprising indeed :P ) I converted the game for vnds and it seems to be working fine (i start it and it caches and all ), but after i turn off the DS and then start the game again then it just crashes with guru error all the time. I suspect that after the first load the files become corrupt of something :S Does anybody know a fix for this?

sighs I'm having trouble with this converter, I've tried converting episode 6 with the converter you provided three times, and it keeps giving me an "umineko-chiru" folder with no contents whatsoever in the subfolders. I've checked to make sure the patch is in its proper place (then again since i just finished dawn yesterday that was a given). I was trying to convert ep6 and everything seemed to go fine, until the converter tried to convert the script. At that point it started to throw errors and in the end it didn't convert the script. I can boot the novel on vnds, but it won't go past the episode select screen, since it cannot find the script.

I get that so far their is no red text option for the VNDS, but my biggest problem is the slowdown. During big fight scenes like in ep 3 and 4, the sword swing sounds are delayed and not as sharp not to mention it takes forever to get past these parts since it loads so slow. I imagine this is because of my conversion settings, can anyone tell me the parameters for conversion so that I get more fluid battle scenes?
I don't believe that its your conversion settings that cause the lag between fight scenes, its the command in the script for the repeating sounds, which VNDS most likely cannot handle. The conversion was a success this time. I did however find one minor bug so far. Erika's normal sprite isn't present in the scenes where they should be. Instead, she's always wearing her wedding dress. So far that's the only noticeable bug, I'll report any other ones i may stumble upon (I know my knowledge isn't very vast in this subject, but I'll at least do what I'm capable of). -UPDATE- I just realized, it's not just Erika, everyone has their alternate outfits, like caped battler, and meta-Maria, ect.
Playing through it now, and I realized sometimes it randomly freezes, usually when a lot of sounds are playing. For example it too me 6 tries to get through the final scene of Episode 2 because it kept freezing at different parts. Same with the Beato vs Virgilia battle. Is this normal due to hardware restrictions on the DS or did I mess up?

Shinsei, I ran into a problem with episode 5, epilogue 2. All through out the Battler sprite appears with his cloak, even when he should just have a suit.
Well, I can't really do much. anonl is the one who made the converter, I just used it. If I really had to I could creep through his code to see what the problem is, but considering the size of the source and my ignorance of his code, it really wouldn't be worth it in the end for me to try to fix it.
He'll probably make a new version of the converter soon if he has the time considering the problems that have been posted so far.
And please, I don't really need to be thanked. I ran the converter, waited a little for it to finish, then uploaded what it spat out.
No work for me at all. Hell, I didn't even do but a tiny bit of testing to make sure it even worked ran.
I know this may be a silly request, but is there a way you can implement an option for the converter to ignore the sounds, and just convert the bgm's? I'm assuming that what causes the lag during the action scenes is the sound repeating, but if I'm wrong (and I won't be suprised if I am) then just forget I asked something this silly, lol.
If you want to test it, you can do a quick search/replace in almost any text editor on the script files.
In Notepad++'s case, search for "sound (.*).aac" and replace with "#sound \1.aac", without the quotes and with the regular expressions radio button selected.
This should find every 'sound' command and comment it out, without having to worry about it putting something in and unwanted spot, such as when a character says 'sound'.

Well I did as you said, and the sound was taken out, it didn't change anything however, and it seems like the script is still giving the command as if it were loading the sounds...anyways, it was a good try I guess, but I figured that it would have been too easy of a solution xD.

There are "delay" commands in the script to prevent it from pre-empting its own sound effects. Those cause delays, but you can skip them by pressing any button (though there may be 5-10 in a row in some places).

My DS freeze exactly at the same place. After many tries, I saw that if I make the backgrounds illisible or just delete them from the folder, I pass through the freeze.
I played the episode 1 just because of the demo who works on my DS.
Then I tried to play episode 2 with the episode 1-4 installation. My DS freeze again at a certain line. I tried to remove the backgrounds, play until a certain time and play with backgrounds again. The same guru meditation error freezes my DS a few lines after.
And, using Notepad +, I saw that my DS freezes every time with a bgload line.... But the files are ok because I saw them earlier on the game...
I don't know how to fix the error and a friend who have a "valid" version give me his entire folder, but I got the same error, and another friend have the same problem...
Did it come from my flashcard ? I dunno, it's a R4 but the demo of episode 1 and other VN from VNDS works perfectly...

Yes, I tried with the last version of the converter.... Maybe it's my PC install which is wrong but a frind who have a valid version give me his and I had the same problem.
I think his converter has a lot of unused trash code (which some is wrong and picked up as such), plus uses a LOT of variables for name stuff that my program doesn't like at all.
I couldn't find anything guru-error inducing, so I guess I'll just need to install and convert my own version. My 1-4 was from an older version of the converter.
I am going to ask something though. The point in an image VNDS uses for displaying a image is the top left, right? In the output log of my program, I found some places where the X value used for displaying a sprite was > 256, therefore meaning it wasn't getting shown. Is that supposed to happen, anonl?

No, but it's probably harmless. I don't properly convert rotated/zoomed sprites, it might be related to that.
The crashes are most likely due to memory fragmentation in vnds.

It's useless, it's aaall useless! Everytime I try to open the converted version of EPs 1-4 I have this "[script] Unable to open script file: script/umiX-opning.1.scr" (X being 1, 2, 3 or 4, depending on the episode I want to play). So can anyone help me? Where can I find these scripts? Can someone upload it???
Also, I don't know if this is normal, but when I'm converting sometimes it says "Ignoring huge image". I'll upload a pic of it.
It's normal for those images to be skipped.

None of them work for me good sir/miss. I guess I just need all of the .scr files that go in the "script" folder. (Btw, in said folder, I just have 1 file called "main" and another folder called "special" which has 4 files called "ep1_end, ep2_end, ep3_end and ep4_end". i.e they all should be 256 x 192. if they are not they may cause the error you are having...maybe...

The installer and ZIP use "[WH] Umineko Chiru English" as their folder name, the install guide stil uses "[WH] Umineko English" -- both appear to work. The converter only finds the translation if it's in a subfolder called "[WH] Umineko Chiru English".

If it is in the folder, then I must've upacked something I shouldn't have or not unpacked something as I don't seem to get any sound so far in the game. Just the beginning, so if it kicks in later I apologise.
Sooo i've been having a play round with a few of the versions.
The 575mb package for episodes 1-4 above give me the same errors as stated, crashing when he says he's going to kill them, at the airport.
I tried copying the sound files from this version over to the 30mb one posted on /rs/, no dice, just messed up sounds. Assuming that versions not meant to handle sound?
The only thing is the no sound version is working fine, no errors and whatnot unlike the bigger, soundier package.

...You check to see if there is a file similar to that name and then change it to umil-opning.1.scr...or you find the script file that gave you the problem and edit that to use the script file that is already there...it's a pretty obvious thing to figure out...
I didn't find anything except main file, foder special in _general forder and nscrip. I don't know where to get umil-opning.1.scr or anything like that.
Aside from the various typos and folders that you speak of and I don't see in either of the downloads provided by Rika-Chama, I'm fairly certain you are doing something completely wrong somewhere. On the other hand, supposing you are using the converter on your own copy of Umineko, you are still probably doing something wrong anyways (in which case, I would haphazardly guess that you don't have the first arc of Umineko). As I find no point in doing something myself if someone else has already spent the time to do so, I would recommend just using Rika-Chama's downloads as they don't seem broken (not that I really looked) and should you be using Rika-Chama's downloads, I would suggest deleting what you have an redownloading, because once again, I don't really see any problems with his downloads.

Several lines in EP5 and EP6, the ones that inclute time (such as '3:00 AM', mostly notable in EP5 trial), are cut out after the colon. Is that an error in the converter? Is someone still working on it?

Not with the current version -- the converter assumes a 640x480 resolution in half a dozen places and I'd have to add explicit support for the voice acting.
At first glance it doesn't look like too much work to support though. I'll look into it in more detail after I finish my current projects.

Adds support for the PS3fication patch, including voice acting. Be warned that the patch itself is still work-in-progress and sometimes sprites/backgrounds use the old image instead of the PS3 ones.
I'll test this the second I get home, and post my findings late tonight, or tomorrow.
So I did a little bit of testing this morning, and here are my findings. As stated, there were instances where old sprites collided with new sprites; however, I noticed this when flipping through episode 4, so I don't know if this is due to the fact that the ps3 patch only supports episode 1, or if that's what you were referring to. Secondly, the voices don't seem to work for me. No errors displayed, but I'm going to chalk this up to me using cm7, so I'll update my post once my phone charges and am able to test this with the stock firmware (since the stock firmware seems to not have problem with .aac files).

I've only played episode 2 briefly, but from what I've seen so far, there are no mismatched sprites/bg's. I was well aware that the ps3 patch only covers episode 1; however, I wasn't sure if that would still ring true with the vnds converted product. I haven't installed my ofw yet, so I can't say for sure the state of the voices.
I just got to test the voices on my stock firmware, and everything seems to be in order (at least for the bit that I tested). As far as episode 2 goes, it seems like every ones sprite is its ps3 counterpart, with the exception of game board-Beato, where her pc sprite is displayed. As far as 3 and 4 go, I'm not too sure yet, as I haven't really tested any of them extensively. On an unrelated subject regarding the vnds android port; would there be a way to implement an option to choose the alignment of the text hub in a future update? I'd much rather have the text toward the top of the screen, rather than under.

I have a feeling that EP8 will be a big file. So maybe you should split it into two parts just in case?
No new characters appear in episode 8 from episode 7, so all that's being added is more text to the script. It should be around the same size as a converted version of episode 7.

I also noticed the _generated background files are all 0kb in file-size.
Then I tried copying the PS3fication from Umineko 4 to Umineko 8's installation directory and run the converter and it finished fine at least (with errors, but pimarily the Invalid image for ld :: xxx), but the scripts in the _generated folder were for episodes 1-4 and not 5-8.
The 1.1.4 converter works fine for Umineko 8, but doesn't give you the option for higher-res images >.< lol.
Just wanted to put this information out there to see if anyone else is running into this problem with converter 1.3.0.

Can someone give a me a step by step instruction to convert umineko from episode 1-8? I really want to play this game on my ds.
There not a whole lot to converting a game. just run the converter.exe file, a window will pop-up asking the directory where umineko is install, fill in that part with the path.
Next is the temp directory, which is typically c:\temp . Target platform is default to nintendo DS. Just click start and the conversion process will start, and will take a good amount of time to get everything done.
Once its done it should have created a directory in the temp directory, just copy that into your ds flash cart where vnds is located.

Yes, you have to have the game installed to specify the path to the game in the converter.

Okay, I know this has nothing to do with the converter you guys are talking about but I'm kinda need help with the pc installation of umineko (5-8). I already posted this material at another forum but I suppose it won't hurt to ask here...
Okay I'm at the part of the installer where it says "Japanese game files required". So I try to put the location of my installer file and I see this message:
"The specified file does not exist. Please insert the DVD or enter the download installer location, and try again."
The only way I could continue the process and click "next" is if I put the file location as:
C:\Users\Name\Documents\UMINEKO8_DL\UMINEKO8_DL\Um ineko8\うみねこのなく頃に散.exe
So, is the .exe file (うみねこのなく頃に散.exe)

Then, it takes me to the "Ready to Install" part and when I click "Install", the Japanese version starts to run. Is this suppose to happen?
Next, the screen says, "extracting downloaded archive Please wait..." (this is the small screen witht the Beatrice thumbnail) and it's taking forever. When I say taking forever I mean the "extracting files from download bar" bar makes no progress.
There's something wrong with the Episode 2-4 PS3 version. The sprites for, example, ange, is the sprites from the original novel. That includes Eva-Beatrice and others.
ya, thats to be expected when the Umineko PS3 patch only modifies Episode 1 sprites. Most sprites will be the older quality in episodes 2-4.
So... EPISODE 8 is now completely translated!!!! :D

The way costume changes are implemented seems to change with every episode, that's what's causing the missing image errors.
I've hacked together a workaround and am now working on the quiz chapters. After that, there's still the purple text part that I have to convert (mostly) by hand.

I messed around with the beta at a glance. So far, the only error that I noticed was battler wearing his Game Master cape during the scene following you picking the correct culprits in Bern's game. I wasn't sure if you meant that Bern's game itself would be broken upon reaching it, or other things would get wonky following her game, but that's all that I've noticed so far. I'll post again if I discover anything else.

I know that I'm super late, but I just realized that there's no way to get the xtra scenes. For instance, during the quiz chapter, even if you get the answer right, you don't get the extra dialog between the people who gave you the quiz. This also goes for the extra content during the end, with Battler and Beatrice in the boat.
